The Jesuits' first missionary contact with the Coeur d'Alene Indians occurred in spring 1842, as Fr. De Smet was enroute to Ft. Colville. Later that summer Fr. De Smet appointed fellow Jesuit Fr. Nicholas Point to establish a mission among them.
